I first became interested in ASL when I was 8 years old. I was inspired to learn because my grandma had lost most of her hearing over time. I wanted to teach her sign language so she could communicate with her hands instead of worrying about having to rely on the declining health of her ears. This was where my ASL journey began.
I had studied diligently and learned as much as I could on my own through DVDs. Though my grandma wasn’t so eager to attempt learning ASL like I had hoped, my love for sign language never dwindled.
The rest of my childhood had passed without many opportunities to utilize all I had learned…
Years later, I arrived at the University of Georgia where I would spend the remaining 3 years of my college career. I was ecstatic to find they offer ASL classes!! Learning from my wonderful Deaf professors is when I became extremely serious about this language.
I majored in Art, and for my exit show I chose hands as my subject. I was - and still am - very inspired by the fact that people can fully communicate with their hands and body rather than their voice. In college, my passion continued to grow more and more. I was only required to take 3 courses of sign language in college, but I pushed back my graduation date just so I could complete 4 - I enjoy sign language that much! I knew this had to be my career path in one way or another.
It’s been a bumpy ride trying to turn this into my career. I’m thankful for all the closed doors because they pushed me in the direction that led me here.
Hi, I’m Hannah, and welcome to The ASL Coach. :)
Since I’ve started tutoring, I have loved every second I’ve poured into my students. Watching them grow every day keeps me motivated to persevere no matter what.
I’m on my way to becoming a certified interpreter. Taking it one step at a time, I’m enjoying the ride and consuming as much ASL knowledge and experience as possible so that I can share this beautiful language with others to the best of my ability.
